The Independent National Electoral Commission has opened public scrutiny of the personal details and academic records of presidential contenders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The process commenced on Saturday, August 1, with the documents of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and his deputy, Vice President Kashim Shettima, among the first to be pasted at INEC offices across the country.
According to copies of Tinubu’s Form EC9 obtained by _News Century_, the President listed a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Chicago State University in the United States. The transcript attached to the form indicates the degree was awarded “with honours” on June 22, 1979.
The form also includes his NYSC discharge certificate, showing service in Oyo State from December 1982 to November 1983.
Under employment history, Tinubu named three organizations: Mobil Nigeria Limited, 1983 to 1992, with “advancement” cited as reason for exit; Lagos State Government, 1999 to 2007, exit due to “legal end of tenure”; and the Federal Government of Nigeria, from 2023 to date.
For basic education, the years for primary and secondary school were filled as “0000.” Only his university qualification, the 1979 http://B.Sc, was dated.
Other personal details show a date of birth of March 29, 1952, putting his age at 74. He listed Lagos as place of birth, No. 4 Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi as residential address, and “politician” as occupation.
For Shettima, the displayed records trace his schooling from the beginning.
A Certificate of Primary Education from the then North-Eastern State Ministry of Education shows he attended Lamisula I Primary School from 1972 to 1978, graduating second in a class of 22. English, History and Religious Knowledge were marked as his best subjects.
His WAEC result from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, dated June 1983, reflects six credits and passes, with distinctions in Religious Knowledge and Economics.
Tertiary records show a Second Class Upper degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri, awarded in August 1989, followed by a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.
His NYSC discharge certificate indicates service between October 1989 and October 1990.
The publication is done under Form EC9, as required by Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026. The law compels INEC to make candidates’ particulars public within 21 days of receiving them.
In a statement, the commission said:
“Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties.”
The documents are on display at INEC headquarters and state offices nationwide, including the Lagos office in Sabo-Yaba and in LGA offices within relevant constituencies.
The Electoral Act also grants citizens the right to request certified true copies of nomination forms and to approach the courts over claims of false information or forgery.
Meanwhile, INEC’s updated schedule shows campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will kick off on August 19. Campaigns for governorship and state assembly polls will begin at a later date.
