Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of targeting the Catholic Church and showing disregard for the Christian faith, saying the administration should “leave the Catholic Church alone.”
Amaechi made the remarks on Monday during a live one-on-one interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Channels TV’s _Politics Today_, where he was introduced in the context of discussions around the ADC Vice Presidential candidate.
When asked how the government could remedy what he described as an offense to the Catholic Church, Amaechi said the issue was not political, but one of respect.
“They offended the Catholic Church,” he said. “He’s sending out more attack dogs against the church. He has no respect and regard for the Catholic church. And I think they have no respect and regard for the Christian faith.”
Pressing further, Okinbaloye asked if the comments had political consequences. Amaechi pushed back, saying he was not on the programme to discuss politics.
“I’m not here for politics. I’m not interested in politics,” he said. “What I’m here to discuss is that they should leave the Catholic Church alone and they should respect God and respect the Christian faith. They should stop insulting Christians and the leadership of the Christian Church.”
Amaechi said he had come out to speak after concluding the traditional mourning period for his mother and did not intend to get into partisan calculations.
“I told you that when I finish mourning my mother, the traditional mourning periods and all that, I will come out. So I’m not here to discuss politics,” he stated.
When asked directly “Do you care?” and “What’s your care?” Amaechi responded: “Well, I should… but I don’t care what. Politically speaking.”
He added: “I’m not God. Does that have a consequence? I don’t know.”
The former Rivers State governor did not specify the actions or comments by the presidency that he was referring to.
