Call For Probe As Lawyer Alleges Banishment Of Accord Supporter In Osun
Human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has called on Senator Francis Fadahunsi and Hon. Wole Oke intervened over an alleged case of political intimidation and unlawful banishment in Ilase, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Olajengbesi said he received a “disturbing report” concerning Ms. Adeola Idowu Adegoke of Ilase, described as a known supporter of the Accord Party.
According to the statement, Adegoke’s shop was allegedly looted and she, along with her mother, was summoned by some individuals in the community. Olajengbesi alleged that she was then told she would be banished from Ilase unless she agreed to work politically for Senator Fadahunsi and Hon. Wole Oke.
The lawyer claimed that under pressure, Adegoke agreed to support Senator Fadahunsi but declined to campaign for Hon. Wole Oke. Despite this, he said, she was still ordered to leave the community
“We must never use political power or influence to intimidate, punish or destroy the livelihood of any citizen because of political differences,” Olajengbesi said. “This is not possible in a democracy.”
He directly called on Senator Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, and Hon. Wole Oke, a federal lawmaker, because “their names are being invoked” in the incident.
“If these actions were taken without their knowledge or authority, they must immediately call those responsible to order,” he stated.
Olajengbesi described the alleged actions as “ungodly, unacceptable and contrary to law,” adding that “no citizen should be intimidated, banished or deprived of their livelihood because of their political choice.”
“Politics must never descend to this level,” the statement concluded.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the offices of Senator Fadahunsi or Hon. Wole Oke regarding the allegations.
