Calls for focus on insecurity, warns against politicising security institutions
The African Action Congress (AAC) has condemned the reported involvement of the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.), in partisan political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement issued on Saturday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex I. Elanu, the AAC accused the minister of publicly campaigning for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.
“The Defence Minister’s decision to publicly mobilise support for the ruling APC raises serious concerns about the propriety of a serving military professional and cabinet minister occupying himself with partisan political mobilisation,” the party said.
The AAC argued that the minister’s primary responsibility should be national security at a time when “Nigerians continue to face devastating insecurity, killings, kidnappings and displacement across the country.”
“The Minister of Defence should be defending Nigerians, not campaigning for the APC,” the statement read. “At a time when Nigerian families are being torn apart by insecurity… Nigerians expect the Defence Minister to devote his energy to protecting lives and securing the country – not attending political mobilisation meetings and canvassing votes for the President.”
The party said the conduct was “particularly troubling” because the minister’s duty is to the Nigerian people, not to any political party. It added that if Gen. Musa “has chosen to become a campaign mobilizer for the APC, Nigerians are entitled to ask for his sack, so that he can be focused on his new found calling.”
The AAC also warned that “Nigeria’s security institutions must not be reduced to instruments of partisan politics,” and called on members of the security establishment to “uphold professionalism, neutrality and the national interest, regardless of their personal political preferences.”
“Nigeria does not need political speeches about unity while insecurity continues to claim lives. Nigeria needs competent leadership, accountability and a government capable of protecting its citizens,” the party said.
Concluding the statement, the AAC urged Nigerians to “reject the politics of impunity and failed leadership in 2027 and embrace a genuine political alternative committed to the Total Liberation of Nigeria.”
