The Arewa Youths Assembly for Good Leadership, AYAGL, has issued a notice of simultaneous peaceful protests across the three geopolitical zones of Northern Nigeria over what it described as “unbearable” increases in fuel prices.
In a letter signed by its President, Danbature Abdul-Hamid, and addressed to security authorities, the group said the protests will be held jointly with over 100 affiliated youth, civil society and community organizations operating across Northern Nigeria.
According to the statement, the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, has soared to between N1,700 and nearly N2,000 per litre in several parts of the North, a development it said has crippled commercial activities, driven food inflation and pushed millions of households into distress.
The group accused the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, of “total incompetence, regulatory failure, and indifference” to the suffering of Nigerians, saying the agency has failed in its mandate to ensure downstream stability and fair market operations.
Consequently, the Assembly outlined two major demands:
1. The immediate resignation or sack of the Chief Executive of the NMDPRA by the President for failure to regulate petroleum pricing.
2. Urgent regulatory intervention to bring fuel prices back to an affordable level nationwide.
Protest Details
The group said in exercise of its constitutional rights to freedom of assembly, it will stage peaceful processions simultaneously in three regional hubs.

The Assembly stated that its members are fully mobilized to continue the demonstrations in the three hubs until its demands are met.
It also requested adequate security coverage from relevant security agencies to ensure the processions are not hijacked by criminal elements, stressing that the protest will be peaceful, lawful and organized.
