Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to recent revelations by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on the political maneuverings that shaped the 2023 presidential election.
In a statement on Tuesday, Sowore said Wike is now “singing like a canary” about what transpired behind the scenes in 2022/2023, a period he described as defined by secret deals among the major political actors.
Sowore referenced the series of meetings held by the G5 Governors — comprising Nyesom Wike, Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom, Okezie Ikpeazu and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi — who opposed the PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, including their much-publicised meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in London in August 2022 which also had Labour Party candidate Mr. Peter Obi in attendance
He also recalled Mr. Peter Obi’s visits to Rivers State at the time and the public praise Wike received from some supporters of the Labour Party, including activist Aisha Yesufu’s popular “Wike Keena” comment.
According to Sowore, Wike’s latest interview, where he disclosed that the G5 adopted a strategy to allow Peter Obi win in Edo and Cross River to block Atiku while stopping Obi in Rivers State, confirms what he had warned Nigerians about at the time.
“We said then that more was going on behind the scenes than Nigerians were being told, and that some of these political actors were helping Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu while publicly presenting themselves differently and blackballing any Nigerian with a different opinion,” Sowore said.
“I always said it was a packaged fraud. They ensured no revolutionary change would happen. They never wanted things to change in the first place. You all know better now.”
The activist added that instead of addressing the questions raised about the arrangement, his camp and others who challenged it were attacked and blackmailed.
Sowore urged Nigerians to revisit the statements, visits and endorsements made during the 2022/2023 election cycle and compare them with Wike’s current account.
“Don’t let them deceive you again!” he added,
