NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on political leaders and contestants to put national unity above partisan rivalry, saying Nigeria’s progress depends on ideas, not division.
Obi made the call yesterday at the commissioning of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, Presidential Campaign Office in Abuja.
He was joined by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who is also Leader of the APM, and the APM Presidential candidate.
Speaking at the event, Obi said the moment calls for a different kind of politics built on shared values.
“I used the opportunity to emphasise the need for us to build a New Nigeria anchored on Unity, Love, Justice, mutual respect, and inclusion, particularly at a time when political contests can become unnecessarily contentious and divisive,” Obi said.
He urged all candidates in the forthcoming elections to focus the debate on solutions to Nigeria’s most pressing problems.
“We must insist that our shared love for our country should always be greater than our political differences. This is my call to all contestants in the forthcoming elections,” he stated.
“Let our contest be about ideas and solutions that will address the enormous challenges facing our country today: insecurity, poverty, hunger, inequality, and the growing number of out-of-school children.”
Obi added that political competition should be about improving lives and restoring hope, while maintaining “respect, decency, and love for one another.”
He also congratulated Governor Makinde, Governor Mohammed, and APM leaders and members on the opening of the new campaign office, describing it as an important milestone for the party.
Obi closed with his signature rallying cry: “A New Nigeria is POssible with OK.”
The APM campaign office launch brings together leaders across party lines ahead of the next general elections, with unity and issue-based politics emerging as a central message.
