The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has condemned the killing of Ibrahim Mbaye, a student of the University of Jos, who was allegedly beaten to death by fellow students over an accusation of stealing an iPhone 16.
In a statement on Monday, NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said Mbaye was reportedly assaulted by a group of individuals, humiliated and locked inside a room despite the alleged phone not being found in his possession.
“_It is deeply heartbreaking that a promising young student had to lose his life in such a cruel and senseless manner. No allegation, regardless of its nature, justifies mob violence or extrajudicial punishment,_” Afeez stated.
The student body leader said he was encouraged by reports that some of the suspects have been arrested, and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and swift investigation to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice.
“_Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, as this will serve as a deterrent to anyone who believes violence is an alternative to due process,_” he said.
Afeez noted that NANS has repeatedly warned against jungle justice, stressing that such acts have no place on campuses or in society and must be condemned by every student and well-meaning Nigerian.
On behalf of NANS, he extended condolences to the family of Ibrahim Mbaye, his friends and the entire University of Jos community, praying that God grants them strength to bear the loss.
“_No student should ever lose their life to jungle justice. Aluta Continua!_” the statement concluded.
