President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the rescue of 308 Nigerian citizens abducted in separate attacks in Kwara and Niger states, describing the operation as proof of improved collaboration among security agencies.
According to a State House statement issued on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, the victims were freed from the Kainji Lake National Park Forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State following an intelligence-led joint operation.
The National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) coordinated the mission with personnel from the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.
Of those rescued, 163 were abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama LGA, Kwara State, while 145 were taken in Niger State. Officials said it was the largest single-day rescue carried out by the joint security team to date.
President Tinubu commended the security forces for what he called bravery and seamless inter-agency collaboration.
“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services. I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives,” the President said.
The rescued citizens are currently receiving first aid and essential medical care at the medical facility in Wawa Cantonment. The statement said they will be handed over to their respective state governments for further care and reunification with families after medical evaluations are completed.
While applauding the rescue, President Tinubu stressed the need to strengthen national security infrastructure to prevent future abductions. He directed security agencies and relevant stakeholders to immediately improve early warning mechanisms, deepen community-level intelligence gathering, and enhance rapid response capabilities nationwide.
The President reassured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to eliminating security threats, protecting vulnerable communities, and restoring lasting peace across the country.
