The Osun State Police Command has launched a full investigation after a 60-year-old man was shot dead in Osogbo on Wednesday, hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke and musician David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, visited the Ataoja’s palace.
According to a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. in the Itaolokan area of Osogbo.
Police said the victim was identified as Tajudeen Yusuf, 60, of Oke-Ayepe area, Osogbo.
The Command said that earlier in the day, Governor Adeleke and his nephew Davido paid a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, at the palace.
Immediately after the visit, police allege that Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” an ex-convict described as a suspected notorious thug and member of an eye confraternity, attempted to gain access to Davido. He was reportedly resisted by members of the singer’s security team.
The confrontation drew other suspected gang members who temporarily blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the convoy. Police said the governor’s convoy eventually left the area safely.
Shortly afterwards, the same group allegedly departed and shot Yusuf at Itaolokan.
A patrol team was mobilized to the scene where Yusuf was found in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, but was pronounced dead by doctors on duty.
The Commissioner of Police (Election), CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the killing and said the Command has commenced a full-scale investigation to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
“The Command strongly condemns the dastardly act and assures members of the public that we will deploy all available resources to bring those responsible to justice,” the statement said.
Police are urging anyone with useful information to report to the nearest station or contact the Command through its official channels. Residents have also been advised to remain calm and avoid reprisals.
