The 2026 Osun State Governorship Election was conducted largely without widespread disruption, but significant vulnerabilities around voter inducement, technology, and security must be addressed before the 2027 General Elections, according to a post-election report by Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI).
Presenting KDI’s findings on Wednesday, Executive Director Bukola Idowu said most polling units observed by the group were able to conduct voting, election materials were available in the large majority of locations, and Election Day remained relatively peaceful compared with the pre-election period.

KDI identified delays in election administration, uneven performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), voter inducement, reports of security interference, localised violence, and discrepancies in result analysis as areas requiring stronger institutional preparedness and accountability.
Idowu singled out the conduct of Osun voters for praise, noting that despite attempts to subvert the process, citizens showed “remarkable commitment to protecting their votes.”

According to KDI data, party supporters accounted for 46.8% of reported actors, followed by party agents at 29.8%. Voters made up 10.6%, and community leaders 9.6%.
Inducements included food items, drinks, and cash payments ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦50,000. Ereke said methods are becoming more discreet, with vehicles positioned away from polling units and small businesses such as food vendors and provision shops allegedly used to facilitate payments.
“This pattern demonstrates that monitoring conducted solely within the immediate polling-unit environment may not capture the full inducement ecosystem,” Ereke said. KDI assessed inducement as a continuing threat to voters’ independent choice and called for security and electoral stakeholders to adapt monitoring beyond the polling-unit perimeter.
Retired AIG Abutu Yaro, speaking on security, said KDI verified 17 election-related violence incidents across 10 LGAs, resulting in more than 44 documented victims.
The incidents included gunshots, physical assaults, intimidation and harassment. Each of the first three categories accounted for five incidents, or 29.4%. Voting was disrupted at one polling unit: Iroyin Ayo Open Space, Ward Elejigbo D/Ejemu in Ejigbo LGA, leading to cancellation in that area.
Geographically, Ejigbo and Osogbo each accounted for 17.6% of verified incidents. Ife East, Ilesa East and Irewole each had 11.8%. Odo-Otin, Boripe, Ifelodun, Ila and Ola-Oluwa recorded one incident each.
Yaro noted the election-day figures were lower than pre-election tensions. Between October 2025 and August 2026, KDI recorded 81 election-related violence incidents and 15 fatalities in Osun.
He also flagged multiple reports of post-election violence and property destruction in Ilesa, Iperindo, Atakumosa East, Modakeke and Ikire. “Election-related security risks do not necessarily end when polling closes,” he said.
KDI is calling on the Nigeria Police Force to promptly prosecute 295 persons arrested for election-related offences, and urged authorities to make information on case progression public, including transfers to INEC where applicable.
For KDI, the central lesson is that peaceful voting is necessary but not sufficient for credibility. Credibility, Idowu said, also depends on “the freedom of voters to make their choices, the consistent application of electoral rules, the professionalism of electoral and security personnel, the reliability of election technology, the accuracy of result collation, and the transparency with which results are communicated.”
The organisation urged institutions, stakeholders and citizens to use evidence from Osun to close identified gaps ahead of 2027, and pledged to continue evidence-based observation, research and policy engagement to strengthen electoral integrity in Nigeria
