The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has announced the suspension of an FCDA director accused of issuing unauthorized building permits on waterways in Abuja.
Wike explained that the move is part of the FCT Administration’s push to tackle persistent flooding in the capital. He linked the problem to years of illegal developments on drainage paths and to the effects of climate change.
Speaking during a media briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the minister said buildings put up along water channels have blocked natural drainage, which has made flooding worse in parts of Abuja during heavy downpours.
“The flooding we’re seeing in Abuja now comes from people constructing on waterways illegally over many years,” Wike stated.
He added that the administration has taken action against an official said to be behind some of those approvals.
“In line with Civil Service regulations, we suspended an FCDA director who was unlawfully granting building approvals for construction on waterways,” the FCT Minister said.
Wike also pointed out that illegal building isn’t the only cause. He noted that climate change has played a role in the recent flood incidents.
“Climate change is also to blame for the flooding being experienced lately in Abuja,” he said.
The minister’s remarks come as concerns grow over flooding in several areas of the Federal Capital Territory after recent heavy rains.
