African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, will depart Nigeria on Thursday night for a tour of the United States and Canada, ahead of what his party calls a more intensive phase of its 2027 election campaign.
In a statement released by the AAC, Sowore said the trip will include time to reunite with his immediate family after what the party described as a “prolonged stay” in Nigeria.
The AAC leader has spent much of his adult life campaigning for civil rights in Nigeria. According to the statement, his recent activities in the country were repeatedly disrupted by arrests, detentions and prosecutions by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The DSS recently announced it had instructed prosecutors to pause a cybercrime case against Sowore linked to his public description of President Bola Tinubu as a criminal. The AAC said the decision came after months of legal battles and resistance by Sowore and his legal team.
During the North American tour, Sowore is scheduled to meet members of the Nigerian diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders in Washington, D.C. and other cities as the AAC ramps up preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The party said the candidate is expected to return to Nigeria before the end of September to resume campaign activities on the ground.
“The #Sowore2027 campaign will continue at full strength across Nigeria,” the statement said. “Sowore will participate virtually in campaign activities while abroad and will physically attend relevant engagements with Nigerians in the diaspora across North America.”
The AAC reiterated its core message for the 2027 race.
“The message remains unchanged. Nigeria needs revolutionary transformation, equal rights and revolutionary justice, not another recycling of the political establishment,” the statement said.
Sowore ran for president in 2019 and 2023 under the AAC banner, positioning the party as an alternative to Nigeria’s two dominant political parties.
