The All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council has called on former Anambra State governor Peter Obi to resign from the 2027 presidential race over what it described as revelations about his tenure in Anambra.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, September 21, 2026, by its spokesman, Dele Alake, the Council said recent disclosures by the Anambra State Government have contradicted Obi’s long-standing claim that he left the state debt-free and was marked by fiscal prudence.
According to the statement, the Anambra State Government disclosed that Obi’s administration spent about USD 4.05 billion, or N5.4 trillion, over eight years in office and contracted USD 123.77 million in external loans.
The Council quoted the state government as saying that as of March 17, 2014, when Obi left office, there were eight different external borrowings for projects including malaria control, erosion control, education and healthcare, which subsequent administrations, including that of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, have continued to service.
The statement argued that while borrowing for development is not improper, it contradicts Obi’s public claim of leaving the state with a clean bill of health.
The Council also alleged that despite the borrowings, Obi’s administration had little to show in terms of development and failed to pay workers in some ministries. It cited a memo dated April 25, 2006, from Obi’s then Chief of Staff, Chuks Ileogbunam, appealing to the governor to pay N15 million in monthly salaries owed to Water Corporation staff to avoid protests at the Governor’s office.
The Council recalled that Obi had promised to quit the presidential race if it was proven that he left a debt burden for Anambra, and that he had similarly promised during his governorship campaign to resign if workers were not paid as and when due.
The statement concluded by advising Obi to seek forgiveness from Anambra people and to honour his promise to withdraw from the 2027 race.
