The Imole Campaign Council (TICC) has called on the Nigeria Police Force to give a public update on its investigation into Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi following an alleged threat to kill members of the Accord party.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, TICC said the demand followed a viral video in which the senator was accused of making an open call for the killing of Accord members ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
The council said human life “is too precious to be subjected to such daring threat” and argued that every effort should be made to protect it. According to TICC, members in Ijesaland and across Osun have been living “under immense fear for their life” since the video surfaced, making it a grave public concern with the election days away.
“We consider human life to be too precious to be subjected to such daring threat by Senator Fadahunsi and as such, believes that every effort should be spared to guarantee its sanctity,” the statement read.
TICC said it was not asking the police to prejudge the senator or presume guilt, but to show that the law applies equally regardless of status in society. The group urged the police to demonstrate that the invitation extended to Senator Fadahunsi was not “a mere rhetoric to calm public anger but a genuine intervention to ensure that reckless utterances comes with consequences.”
The council asked that, upon review of the threat video, if the intention to harm Accord leaders and members is established, the police should not delay in charging Senator Fadahunsi to court.
TICC also appealed to Accord leaders and members in Ijesaland not to be provoked into violence, and to continue mobilising peacefully for the re-election of Governor Adeleke.
“Political disagreement must never become a justification to threaten the life of fellow citizens or opposing political parties,” Olajengbesi stated.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued a public update on the status of the investigation or the outcome of the senator’s reported invitation.
