NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi was at Eda Plaza in Jabi, Abuja yesterday, where an inferno gutted part of the complex and left more than 45 traders without shops.
Obi met with some of the affected traders who were still clearing debris and salvaging what remained of their goods. He expressed his deepest sympathy to them and promised modest support as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their livelihoods.
According to Obi, the loss goes beyond buildings and merchandise. He said the shops represent years of hard work, savings, sacrifice and hope, and that the fire has disrupted livelihoods, set back dreams, and placed additional hardship on families.
The former governor reiterated his position that government must care for its people, especially in moments of vulnerability. “In times like this, leadership must be measured not only by what government builds, but also by how it stands with citizens when they lose what they have painstakingly built,” he said.
Obi also prayed that God Almighty grants the affected traders the strength, resources and opportunity to recover, and that their businesses and livelihoods will be restored.
