The Intelligence Response Team, IRT, of the Nigeria Police Force has foiled a planned abduction of a cleric in Abuja and arrested four suspects linked to the plot.
The suspects were paraded in Abuja as part of recent operational achievements of the IRT in combating violent crimes in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.
According to the police, the planned abduction targeted an assistant pastor of a church in Abuja. The investigation revealed that the alleged plot involved individuals who were familiar with the church and the intended victim.
Speaking during the parade of suspects, the Commander of the IRT, DCP Adamu Muazu, said the case serves as a warning to the public on the need to be discreet with personal information shared in public gatherings.
He advised worshippers and members of the public to be cautious about details they share concerning their private lives, businesses and movements, noting that such information could be misused by persons with criminal intentions.
The police said intelligence received about the planned act enabled operatives to intervene before the plan could be executed. Items linked to the alleged preparation, including a vehicle and other materials, were recovered during the operation.
DCP Muazu urged religious organisations to strengthen security arrangements around their premises, especially during evening programmes. He advised churches to ensure proper lighting, controlled access and improved monitoring of activities around their facilities.
He also called on the public to support security agencies with timely and credible information, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.
The IRT Commander said investigation into the matter is ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.
In a separate operation, the IRT also arrested two other suspects in connection with highway robbery and recovered a vehicle linked to the case. Police said investigations are ongoing to determine if the suspects are linked to other incidents.
The police assured residents of the FCT of continued efforts to prevent crime and ensure safety through intelligence-led operations.
