NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi marked his 65th birthday by sponsoring free surgeries for 65 children at Mother Mary Hospital, Isolo, Lagos.
Obi attended the final follow-up clinic and appreciation programme at the hospital yesterday, where he confirmed the successful completion of the medical outreach.
In a statement shared after the event, Obi said the surgeries were carried out by Dr. Folaseye Adebayo and her medical team. The procedures included adenotonsillectomy, an operation to remove enlarged or chronically infected tonsils and adenoids that can cause breathing difficulties, recurrent infections, and sleep problems in children.
“I am deeply grateful to God Almighty for guiding the medical team throughout the process and for granting all 65 children safe and successful surgeries,” Obi said
He described listening to parents’ testimonies as the most touching part of the programme. “Hearing how these procedures have improved their children’s health and quality of life” made the occasion significant for him, he added.
Obi extended appreciation to Dr. Adebayo and her team, the hospital management, the parents, and all contributors to the initiative.
He also used the moment to reflect on the purpose of birthdays. “For me, birthdays are not merely occasions for celebration. They are opportunities to give back, touch lives, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor closed with prayers for healthcare workers and a reiteration of his political slogan: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
The outreach adds to Obi’s record of marking personal milestones with charitable initiatives focused on health and education.
